Το άλμπουμ From Under The Tarn των S:t Erik, είναι ένα από τα πιο πολύτιμα διαμάντια της Σουηδικής doom σκηνής και όχι μόνο. Η ιστορία πάει πίσω στο 2009 όταν κυκλοφόρησε για πρώτη φορά από την ρωσική Solitute Productions. Αυτή τη στιγμή που μιλάμε μία νέα εταιρία, η Spora Recordz ετοιμάζεται να επανακυκλοφορήσει αυτό το μοναδικό άλμπουμ και μάλιστα σε βινύλιο.
Όπως κάθε καλό doom συγκρότημα, έτσι και οι S:t Erik κερδίζουν τον ακροατή με την επιβλητικότητα και με το κέντημα σκοτεινής ατμόσφαιρας. Τα δυνατά χαρτιά όμως της μπάντας από την Ουψάλα είναι δύο. Η ποιητική φωνή του τραγουδιστή που μοιάζει να κηρύττει, άλλα και η μεθοδικότητα που χρησιμοποιούν τα synthesizer με αποτέλεσμα το μοναδικό πάντρεμα αφαιρετικής mantra και φουτουριστικών ήχων.
Τα "Goddess" και "Search" είναι τραγούδια που φανερώνουν τις επιρροές των S:t Erik από τους πατριάρχες του είδους Sleep και Om, άλλα το "Your Highness" είναι το τραγούδι που απελευθερώνει πιο πολλή ενέργεια από τα υπόλοιπα του δίσκου και είναι πιο κοντά στον ήχο των High On Fire. Νομίζω πως η αγαπημένη μου στιγμή είναι το "Black Wall" με το νεφελώδες groove γιατί μέσα σε αυτό περικλείονται όλες οι αρετές της μπάντας.
Αξιοθαύμαστο γεγονός είναι ότι το συγκρότημα καταφέρνει να ισορροπεί ανάμεσα στις κλασικές φόρμες του σκοτεινού ιδιώματος που υπηρετεί, άλλα ταυτόχρονα βάζει την δικιά του (μαύρη) πινελιά.
Σίγουρα λοιπόν έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα από τα άλμπουμ που σημάδεψαν τον συγκεκριμένο ήχο τα τελευταία χρόνια. Το πρώτο βήμα της μπάντας ήταν βροντερό, άλλα ένας γίγαντας, όπως είναι οι S:t Erik, δεν αρκεί να δείχνει μόνο τη δύναμη του άλλα και την εξυπνάδα του. Οι Σουηδοί διαθέτουν και τα δύο και είμαι σίγουρος πως θα τα αξιοποιήσουν στο μέλλον όπως πρέπει.
The album From Under The Tarn by S:t Erik, is one of the most valuable diamonds of the Swedish doom music scene, and it doesn't end here. The story goes back to 2009 when it came out for the first time by the Russian Solitute Productions. Right now, a new company, Spora Recordz, is about to re-release this unique album and in fact in a vinyl edition.
As it applies with any good doom band, S:t Erik wins the audience with their majestic sounds and the "needlepoint" of the dark atmosphere. But the winning cards of the band from Uppsala are these two: The poetic voice of the singer that sounds like preaching, and also their methodic use of the synthesizer that results into the unique match between the abstract mantra and the futuristic sounds.
"Goddess" and "Search" are songs that reveal S:t Erik’s influences by the patriarchs of the genre Sleep and Om, but "Your Highness" is the song that releases more energy than the rest of the album and is closer to the sound of High On Fire. I think my favorite moment is "Black Wall" with the cloudy groove, because it includes all the virtues of the band. It is remarkable that the band manages to balance between the classical forms of this dark idiom that it serves, adding at the same time its own (black) touch.
Therefore, we surely have to do with one of the albums that have marked this particular sound the last few years. The first step of the band was thunderous, but a giant like S:t Erik has to show not only his strength but also his intelligence. The Swedish have both and I am sure that they are going to use them properly in the future.
